What is a 5-minute poem?

It goes like this.

10-15 of reading poems,

Then with a completely blank page, spend 5 minutes writing your own poem.

Here’s mine from this morning (ok I spent another 10 minutes editing it!).

Breaking Surface

I have fallen beneath the meniscus of words,
Making myself known, my body heard.
There are so many things swimming in my head,
“If you’ve not been fed, become bread”.
I am reflecting too on how hinges are more useful than handles,
How one sits snuggly in the hand,
Whilst the other creates the opening.
I have learned about the gift of betrayal,
And how one might become available,
To its unlikely entrance.
And I am thinking about how ladders are useful,
But sideways moves are just as faithful
To the path.
And even oars, once every stroke,
Must plunge their heads,
Beneath the hinged surface
Of the wintered waters,
And come up,
Aeons later,
Dripping with
Knowing.
If you try it, I would love to read what you came up with.
